Homemade toothpaste

Toothpaste is getting expensive and personally, I am not sure if they are really worth buying anyway because of what is in the toothpaste, words that are hard to pronounce and no knowledge of what it represents. Anything that is being processed is something to wonder about. So, I decided to stop buying and finishing off all the toothpaste stored in my bathroom drawers. It is a personal thing for me to stock up, buying in bulk, hoping to save some bills.

Now back to my mission of what to replace my toothpaste before running out of it. Then I remember in my younger years that people use salt to brush their teeth, especially those who can not afford to buy a tube of toothpaste. They use what is available and salt is one of them as most homes have salt for cooking. Why not use it for something else too? It is a very practical philosophy for those who were born yesterday, making the most of what they have at home.  I am one of those people but somehow got lost and end up using toothpaste because it is convenient and because most people are using it anyway. Realizing I was not using my brain when I decided to follow the toothpaste people, it is time to wake up and go back to the basics.

What could be a good partner for salt? Something that is edible and easy to find. How about baking soda? It is use for washing, baking, cleaning and more.  I have heard a lot of people using baking soda for toothpaste too. Just shake some baking soda on your toothbrush, add a drop of water and viola, homemade toothpaste is born.

Homemade toothpaste

1 cup Salt (I use sea salt)
1 cup Baking Soda

Mix in a container with a top that has small holes for pouring into your toothbrush and shake, making sure the salt and baking soda are no longer two but one. Add some beans or rice to keep them from sticking. Use it sparingly on your toothbrush. The sea salt can be very salty to your taste and might be tough for some who can't tolerate saltiness. Epsom salt can be replace sea salt. You only need ¼ teaspoon or less for toothpaste, depending on how well you tolerate the salty taste and remember to clean your tongue as well with a tongue scraper. Our tongue is a good place for bacteria to survive so please scrape the tongue once a day.

Since I started using this, my breath seems to smell better. Gone are the days of waking up with a bad breath, but a fresher breath each day. It is very easy, convenient to reach as it’s in your kitchen cabinet and affordable. Next time you run out of toothpaste, feel free to use what’s in your kitchen cabinet and enjoy a fresher breath!

This is a personal choice and I have no regret in using this homemade toothpaste. My bad breath somehow disappeared, replaced with a fresher breath and a happier me!
